Metabolic Age Calculator

A metabolic age calculator usually compares an estimated resting metabolic rate (RMR) or related body-composition estimate with reference values for an age group. It then displays an age-like number. That number is not a measurement of how old your organs are, how long you will live, or whether your metabolism is healthy.

Why results vary between devices

There is no single universal method behind every consumer “metabolic age” score. A device may estimate RMR from height, weight, age, sex, or body-composition readings, then compare the estimate with its own reference group. Different equations and reference populations can produce different labels. Some devices do not explain their formula, so the score may be difficult to reproduce or compare.

Metabolic age explainer: an estimated resting metabolic rate is compared with a reference group; the displayed age is not a biological-age measurement.
Original explainer: the score is a comparison generated by a device, not a measured biological age.

What to do with the result

Use the score, if at all, as a prompt to learn how the device estimates energy needs—not as a diagnosis or a verdict on your health. Resting energy expenditure is only one part of total daily energy use, which also varies with movement, digestion, illness, and other factors. A single scale reading cannot capture all of that.

Do not use a metabolic-age score to set a restrictive diet, diagnose a thyroid condition, or change medication. If you have symptoms or concerns about energy, weight change, or metabolism, speak with a healthcare professional. They can decide whether a clinical assessment is needed.

For a related estimate, see our basal metabolic rate guide. Like BMI, metabolic-age outputs should be interpreted with awareness of the method and its limits; the CDC overview of BMI explains why screening numbers are not a complete individual assessment.

Silent visual explainer. Transcript: metabolic age is a device-generated comparison based on an estimate, not a biological-age test.

Common questions

Is metabolic age the same as biological age?

No. A consumer score is not a validated measurement of biological aging.

Why did my score change?

Inputs, measurement conditions, device algorithms, and reference tables may affect it.

Can it diagnose a slow metabolism?

No. A score alone cannot diagnose a medical condition.
