Lean body mass is not another name for muscle alone. It includes other lean tissues, and a calculator’s estimate depends on the method and measurements used.

What lean body mass means
In a simple accounting sense, lean body mass is total body mass minus fat mass. To calculate it accurately, you would need a reliable estimate of fat mass. A height-and-weight-only equation cannot directly see muscle, bone, organs, or body water. Some formulas estimate body composition using population data, but no single calculator is a universal standard for every person.
The CDC notes that BMI also cannot distinguish fat, muscle, and bone or show where fat is carried. BMI and lean-body-mass estimates answer different questions; neither should be treated as a precise body-composition test. Read the CDC’s overview of BMI and its limitations for context.
Why estimates can differ
Results depend on the equation, units, age and sex assumptions, and the quality of any body-fat input. Even specialized body-composition methods have measurement assumptions. If a number will affect a medical or athletic decision, discuss a suitable assessment with a qualified professional rather than treating an online output as exact.
This page does not claim that a formula measures muscle mass, determine whether someone is healthy, or set a weight goal. For related general reading, see our BMI and body composition guide, tools and calculators, and weight-management resources.

Frequently asked questions
Is lean body mass the same as muscle mass?
No. Lean body mass includes non-fat tissues beyond skeletal muscle, including water and organs.
Can height and weight alone measure lean body mass?
No. A formula may estimate it, but direct body composition is not visible from height and weight alone.
Should I use a lean-mass estimate as a target?
No. It is not a personalized health target or medical recommendation. Discuss goals and measurement choices with a qualified professional.
