Body Adiposity Index Calculator

The body adiposity index (BAI) is a formula-based estimate that uses hip circumference and height. One commonly cited equation is BAI = hip circumference in centimetres ÷ height in metres to the power of 1.5, minus 18. The output is intended as an estimate of body-fat percentage; it is not a direct measurement of fat tissue.

Inputs and method matter

Use the exact units expected by the calculator. Height is entered in metres in this version of the equation, while hip circumference is in centimetres. Different calculators may convert units or round at different stages. If the units are mixed up, the result is not meaningful. A small difference in tape placement can also affect the input.

Body adiposity index explainer: hip circumference and height are inputs to an equation that produces an estimate, not a direct body-fat measurement.
Original explainer: BAI is an equation-based estimate and should not be read as a lab or scan result.

Why an estimate is not a diagnosis

Any formula makes assumptions about how measurements relate to body composition. Individual variation, age, body shape, and other factors may limit how well a population-derived equation fits one person. Do not treat a BAI output as a precise measurement, a diagnosis, or a required target.

Other approaches—including imaging and body-composition instruments—also have their own purposes and limitations. The CDC notes that BMI is a screening measure and does not distinguish fat, muscle, and bone; a different estimate does not automatically provide a complete health assessment. If you have concerns about body composition or health, discuss them with a healthcare professional rather than relying on a single calculator.

See our muscle-mass percentage guide for another example of why method matters, and the CDC overview of BMI limitations for screening context.

Silent visual explainer. Transcript: BAI uses hip circumference and height to estimate body fat; it does not directly measure or diagnose.

Common questions

What does BAI stand for?

Body adiposity index, a formula-based estimate using hip circumference and height.

Is BAI the same as a body-fat scan?

No. It calculates an estimate and does not scan or directly measure tissue.

Can it diagnose a health condition?

No. A calculator output is not a diagnosis or treatment plan.

Sources

Educational information only; not a direct body-fat measurement or medical advice.
