Daily Calorie Needs Calculator

A daily calorie needs calculator estimates how much energy a person may use in a day. Many tools estimate resting energy needs from inputs such as age, height, weight, and sex, then apply an activity factor to approximate total daily energy expenditure. Because these are equations and categories—not direct measurements—the output is a starting estimate rather than an exact requirement.

Why two estimates can differ

Calculators may use different equations, activity multipliers, and rounding rules. The activity level selected is often subjective, and daily movement can change. Illness, medications, growth, pregnancy, and other factors may also affect energy needs. A calculator does not assess nutritional adequacy or diagnose a health condition.

Daily calorie needs infographic: resting energy and activity inform an estimate, which still needs personal health context.
Original explainer: a calorie estimate is not a personalized diet prescription.

Use estimates carefully

Do not treat an online number as a required intake or use it to justify severe restriction. The NIDDK Body Weight Planner is designed for adults and is not intended for people under 18, pregnant, or breastfeeding. People with a history of disordered eating, medical conditions, or special nutrition needs should seek individualized guidance rather than using a general calculator.

For adults, a clinician or registered dietitian can help interpret energy needs in the context of health, activity, and goals. The NIDDK Body Weight Planner explains some limitations and intended use. For another estimate based on activity, read our exercise calorie guide; workout energy and total daily needs are different concepts.
